Review: Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo - The Good

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is a new show that showcases the unique perspective of filmmaker Homi Adajania when it comes to female characters. Adajania doesn't categorize women based on their gender, but on the choices they make that define their future. This approach gives his content an advantage over others in the industry. In this show, Adajania, along with his longtime collaborator Kersi Khambatta, tells a story that takes place in a world free from patriarchal dominance.

The story revolves around the Rani of a fortress who runs an illegal drug factory with her female family members and rescued women. Each woman has a role to play, from making and selling drugs to being expert killers. The setup is unique because it's rare to see a woman in a bada** role in mainstream content. The writing of the show is layered, and each episode reveals new aspects of the fort and its inhabitants. Adajania navigates the rage that fuels these women and shows how they came together not to revolt against men but to kill their egos by showing them that they can run the show.

The visuals of the show are breathtaking, and they always portray women as the heroes of the world. They are brutal when their loved ones are in danger and bonded by trauma rather than blood. The frames are well thought out, and the set design makes the fort a character in itself. The styling inside the fort is well-done, and it's commendable how the show packs a comedic edge while exploring deeper themes. Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo is an engaging show that explores the struggles and aspirations of women who have been silenced and oppressed.

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo: The Bad

While Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is a unique and entertaining series, there are some areas that could be improved. Firstly, the pacing of the series can be slow at times, and some scenes feel dragged out. This can make the show feel a bit tedious, especially in the initial episodes.

Secondly, while the characters are interesting and well-written, some of them could have been explored more deeply. The show focuses mainly on Rani Maa and her family, leaving some of the other characters, such as Shanta, with unexplored potential.

Thirdly, the music in the series doesn't always hit the right notes. While some of the songs fit perfectly with the scenes, others feel unnecessary and disrupt the flow of the narrative.

Finally, the series occasionally relies too much on clichés and melodrama. Some of the twists and turns in the plot feel predictable, and the use of slow-motion shots and dramatic music can become repetitive.

Overall, while Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is a fresh and intriguing concept, there is definitely room for improvement in certain aspects of the show.

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo: Star Performance

Dimple Kapadia's portrayal of Rani Maa, also known as Savitri, is a standout in Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo. Her fiery and confident character is brought to life effortlessly, and Kapadia's performance is a testament to her versatility as an actor. Despite some moments where her dialect feels forced, her acting more than makes up for it.

Isha Talwar's nuanced portrayal of a closeted married woman is impressive, despite her character not getting the same amount of screen time as others. Radhika Madan's natural acting style shines through in her portrayal of Shanta, a fierce member of Rani Maa's drug syndicate. However, her character's inner conflict is not fully explored. Angira Dhar takes on a complex role and performs it well, though her character's unraveling feels like it follows a typical soap opera pattern.

On the male side of the cast, Deepak Dobriyal's portrayal of a stereotypical villain falls short. Varun Mitra's performance is satisfactory, but Ashish Verma's portrayal of Harish stands out as a highlight. His character serves as both a comic relief and an antagonist, effectively representing male chauvinism in the story. Verma's brilliant acting skills make his character a standout among the male cast.

    Conclusion

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo is an engaging and well-crafted show with a unique concept and excellent performances by the female cast. However, the weak male characters and slow pace may be a drawback for some viewers. Overall, it is worth a watch for its refreshing take on women empowerment and intriguing storytelling.
