The 2019 film Joker was originally intended to be a standalone movie with no plans for a sequel.  In an interview with journalist Peter Travers, Phoenix admitted he couldn't stop thinking about the role and expressed interest in exploring more of the character's possibilities. He was reportedly paid $20 million for his involvement in the film.
