A Long Journey to the Big Screen
Plans for a fifth Shrek film first surfaced after the success of Shrek 2 in 2004, with a release date originally aimed for 2013. However, when former DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg decided to end the series with the fourth film, the idea was shelved.
Things changed in 2016 when NBCUniversal bought DreamWorks Animation and confirmed their interest in reviving the franchise. Over the years, small updates trickled in, and in February 2025, the film was officially announced with a teaser trailer.
The Cast
The original voices are returning:
- Mike Myers as Shrek
- Eddie Murphy as Donkey
- Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona
A new addition to the cast is Zendaya, who will voice Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter.
The Story and Style
While exact plot details are still under wraps, the teaser confirmed the return to the magical land of Far Far Away. Some fans are excited, but others have been divided over the film’s updated animation style, comparing it to the reaction to the first design of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2019.
Release Date Changes
Originally set for July 2026, Shrek 5 was moved to December 2026, then delayed again to June 30, 2027. Universal hasn’t given an official reason, but the summer release could be a strategic choice, as animated films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie have done very well during that time. The delay also avoids competition with major December 2026 releases like Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6.

The Legacy of Shrek
The first Shrek film premiered in 2001 and became a global hit, earning nearly $500 million and winning the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Three sequels followed, along with two Puss in Boots spin-offs. Now, Shrek 5 will be the seventh movie in the wider franchise, bringing back the humour, heart, and fairy-tale fun that made the series famous.
Others joke about how long it’s taken, with one person posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Another delay? At this point my kids will be showing Shrek 5 to their kids.”
Despite the delays, the return to the swamp promises to bring back the magic that made Shrek a global favourite. Whether you grew up with the films or are new to Far Far Away, June 30, 2027, is shaping up to be a date worth marking on the calendar.
